When you start a blackjack hand you place a bet and then receive two cards and the dealer also gets two cards. The dealers cards have one face up so you can see what it is and one face down. Once you have your two cards you will do one of the following:

Stay - Take no more cards and stay with your current hand

Hit - Take another card to add to your current hand

Split - If you have two of the same card you can split them into two hands, place another bet equal to your first bet and receive another card for each hand. Basically you have two blackjack hands instead of one. See the house rules for each individual casino. Some of them only let you split certain pairs.

Double Down - Place another bet equal to your first one and take exactly one additional card. You cannot take a second card if you double down. This is a good bet when you have 10 or 11 and the dealer has a poor card showing like a 4 or a 5. Once again, check the house rules as there are variations to double down regulations.

The card values are their face value for cards 2 through 9, 10 points for Tens through Kings and Aces can be either 11 or 1.

Most blackjack game online casinos offer insurance if the dealer is showing an Ace. If the dealer has an Ace and a ten point card then they have a blackjack and the hand is over. Insurance is never a good bet, as the house edge is too big, so don't take it.

Some online blackjack casinos also offer a surrender option. You may surrender your hand after you see your first two cards and the dealers up card and get half your bet back.
